If you read my message a bit more carefully, it was a PHOTO of Lactarius riparius that I was looking for. The description of riparius below obviously doesn’t fit this mushroom, although the habitat, seeps at elevation with alder nearby, does. But of course, it also fits the habitat for alpinus var. mitis.

I can wait for the DNA.

both species grow in similar habitats…

these specimens were quite damp, growing in a seep, near both conifers and alder.

Lactarius alpinus var. mitis has a SMOOTH cap when moist, and sometimes a tiny papillae, like is shown here. This is what we have been calling alpinus var. mitis from the Sierra. There are more obsies of this Sierran Lactarius sp. on MO than just mine.

Do you have a photo of Lactarius riparius somewhere, Noah? Couldn’t find one, myself, but the description for this species claims a “striate to translucent striate margin” which is obviously NOT present here. It was also NOT “viscid, nor subviscid.”

When our funding ship comes in and we run all the DNA from Yosemite, this argument will be settled. Hopefully.

thanks Christian, good lead!
