I have seen polypyramis in the southern part of the State of Mexico near the border with Michoacan. Also, the type of Amanita alexandri was from the state of Hidalgo…it is a synonym of A. polypyramis. And I have personally worked up dried material that I thought was polypyramis from Costa Rica as well. However, the flocculence extends from the stipe on to the top of the bulb … if I’m seeing correctly; and polypyramis has rings of fine warts around the top of the bulb. The diversity of sect. Lepidella in Mexico is probably larger than what we know of from the southeastern U.S.; so I would hesitate to give a name to this observation without a very good match to lots of macroscopic characters.

Could it be A. polypyramis?

There would be a membranous partial veil

(sometimes even a double one) with a distinct band of volval material along the edge. The underside of the partial veil would be connected to the stipe by numerous fibrils. This mushroom has a densely floccose upper stipe. So this can’t be A. cokeri.

In the picture with a hand holding the bulb, it looks as though the bulb came to a sort of point below. Is that correct?

Cap looks like A. cokerii
