covered with what looks like algae.

Is that on soil or on rotten wood?

Maybe it is M. coronilla? It is supposed to be relatively common, and has been reported from South America. I’ve only ever seen M. mucida (looks just like this but grows on wood) and M. vernalis (on soil, but more clavate).
