In coniferous forest. Large specimen ~8-10cm. No veil. Attached gills. Cap dips in the middle.

Recognized by sight: I know it’s a Russula, but since there are so many purple capped russulas I was seeing if anyone on here could help identify.

Used references: Arora’s Mushrooms Demystified, p. 90. Identified mostly by the non-staining stipe, but black-staining areas of the gills.

Odor or shrimp or lobster?

Usually Russula xerampelina is darker purple than photos show, but the odor should be a good identification feature.
