Observation 55038: Lactarius thyinos A.H. Sm.

When: 2010-10-07

Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

45.798364° -77.13545°

Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)

No specimen available

Several, terrestrial in D1A (mixed). Smaller than the ones I’d previously encountered, some much smaller.

The common denominator in all sightings so far is mature balsam fir (Abies balsamea) nearby — ones with trunks as thick as my legs seem to always be within a few feet of this Lactarius when I find it.
