Used references: Phillips. Old name Armillaria caligata. I found this collection near the shore of a pond in sandy soil, which is the habitat state by Phillips. The colors were not quite as stark as the ones in his plate, but other features seemed to be there. The veil remnants on cap, and stem. Also gills staining brown. Never seen something like this in our area before.

Habitat was sandy soil on a small pond trail, in mixed harwoods. May have been a hemlock or conifer but cant recall. It smelled more like what i know as the Matsutake, though this was not that. Its texture was really compact and tough. I tasted it, but other than mushroom and dirt, dont know what to say. No reaction to KOH or ammonia.

Habitat, odor, taste?

Maybe you could give me a hand with this one. I see there are a couple of variations…
