Observation 55421: Cystodermella cinnabarina (Alb. & Schwein.) Harmaja
When: 2010-10-10
No herbarium specimen

Notes: It doesn’t seem to fully match anything in the PNW Key Council key. It was growing in grass, between highway and forest.

In Arora’s key [MD], C. cinnabarina has stalk 8mm thick or more, but none of the mushrooms in this group (there were about 20) had a stalk thicker than 5mm. In Trudell & Amirati (Mushrooms of the PNW), C. cinnabarina is said to have a strong pungent or farinaceous odor, which does not match.

The spores are inamyloid. When I get a chance, I’ll try to look for those harpoon-shaped cheilocystidia. C. granulosum seems to be a possibility too.
