Recognized by sight: Lots of things led me to this ID. First the smell of “mushrooms” like a traditional button mushroom was evident. But since MO’ers dissmiss smell frequently lets move on to the tangibles.
The cap was dark brown when mature, and squamulose. The gills were chocolate brown to light pink and crowded. The stipe was substantial, very white with a large prominent ring. I guess what Wood calls a ‘superior ring’. The bulb was large, but not huge. ALL PARTS STAINED RED!! The stipe when rubbed first formed a bright orange color and then eventually red. KOH negative.
