Observation 55855: Gymnopilus P. Karst.

When: 2010-10-18

Collection location: San Mateo, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Tom (LanLord)

No specimen available

Growing out of the base of a hardwood tree (I don’t know what kind, possibly aspen).

Too young to see underneath without picking so I couldn’t see if there was a veil or not, what colour the gills were or what the stipe looked like.

I’ll gather more pics in a couple days if the gardeners or local residents don’t mash them.

I’m guessing this is:

a G. Luteofolis, but will need to come back in a few days to know for sure.

There were no blue-green stains on the cap, however, they were still very small.
The largest one was barely the size of my thumb nail.
