More microscopy on site! And Whatman filter cards for genetic sampling. Mustn’t let bureaucracy crimp our style.

and yet

they do, all year until the collectors return to find the boxes untouched from the moment they last handled them. it’s tragic. what doesn’t deteriorate en route to the herbarium (bringing/buying a drier next time) will occasionally deteriorate inside the herbarium with no one around to manage what has been deposited. what’s more, facilitating the transport of material takes a triathalon of paperwork and political deftness, and customs can always confiscate and throw away whatever you’ve slaved over getting permission to transport (which is always duplicate material, never unique collections) with complete impunity. One such excursion to Ecuador attended by mycologists from both the US and Europe ended this way. They showed their permits and watched two months of work go into a garbage can behind an airport counter.

Holy crap! I hope someone examines these specimens in detail. Your observations are way too cool to sit in an herbarium uninvestigated.
