Upon further research, I agree with your suggestion, Rod. These were growing next to a large patch of Amerimuscaria. I think that may have had an influence at first. Thanks for questioning!

Could you tell us why you thought it might be close to the muscarioid group?

Amanita muscaria var. persicina is limited to the southeastern U.S. so far as is presently known.
