Recognized by sight: Can look macroscopically identical to C. vinicolor and C. rutilus (which doesn’t appear to occur in the US) and there are no microscopy images or notes.

Recognized by sight: Red-brown to orange to ocher color, growing with pine, decurrent gills. Microscopy needed to assign to species.

Avoid subspecies californicus

In Orson Miller’s opinion it’s not a good subspecies exactly because you get cases like this where they are particularly large, but are in California.
