Observation 61222: Lactarius rubidus (Hesler & A.H. Sm.) Methven

Most of these were tiny (2cm or there about) however, on occasion there were some approaching 5cm across. They were growing in mixed hardwood and conifers, mostly fir and oak.

Latex was watery, perhaps just slightly milky in colour.

Flesh was exceedingly brittle, it was difficult to grasp without breaking the cap or stem.
