This species can be quite variable in appearance. It could easily be something else though, as you said.

Unfortunately, I didn;t take pictures from the side, but if you look carefully, the polypore was attached to the tree (or stump) and has several “stories” or layers – shelves growing above each other (seen in the upper picture). it’s got to be a differnt one.
