Recognized by sight: found ~2.5 miles inland in mixed conifer forest

Recognized by sight: cap looks more like a Dermocybe than C. californicus. Plus the gills are a little on the bright orange side.

Recognized by sight: Orange gills and dark brown cap edged with orange veil always says C. malicorius to me. The real trick is to cut it in half. The flesh should be dark brown, like the cap.
