I had the same question, so I asked around here, and it seems that no one here has gotten around to sequencing C. fallax from local stuff just yet. In many cases we have seen that stuff from Arizona tends to over-lap with middle America and the East, more than California, but not always. So, I think this might be who knows.

I actually have material of C. carcharias from Europe, and C. fallax from California. I just don’t have all that easy a way to make ITS sequences…

if I like the conclusion that fallax is only a colour form of carcharias.

One collection labeled fallax from Arizona is indeed a close match with Cystoderma carcharias (var. fallax sensu Saar).
But another collection from Canada, also labeled fallax, is close to Cystodermella cinnabarina.
Only two North american collections are sequenced. Do we know which – or any of them – is the true american fallax?
