Irene, I used your spore measurement method on the spores of observation (58500) and posted the results there.

Thanks

Thanks once again for your input! You’ve helped me so much!

I’ve yet to give your method of measuring spores a try, but I have some free time today and will try it within the next few hours and will let you know what I come up with.

Not sure

but I think KOH (or NaOH) works on dried specimen too.

What I see on the “cap” surface looks more like ends of longer hyphae than cystidia, but whatever it is, I don’t know if it’s called pileocystidia on a club fungus..
The incrusted hyphae could be an important observation, but I don’t have descriptions with such details.

But you have seen that the flattened top is sterile (without basidia and spores). That is another character of C. truncatus (and possible varieties of it).

You don’t seem to have a ruler for measuring spores, but have you tried the method I described when we discussed your Pluteus (obs 58500)?

I’ve yet to get my KOH.
but I will do this as soon as I get some.

Will it react the same on a dried specimen?

checked any reaction with KOH? A drop on the surface (try immediately below the “cap”) should be bright red on Clavariadelphus truncatus – which it reminds of..

Could anyone tell me if the structures in the cap cuticle pictures are pileocystidia?
