there are some photos of H. rosellus online that really look like this.
I didn’t even consider Hypomyces because there didn’t appear to be a host.
Now that I look at the photos, however, there does appear to be some sort of yellowy-brown tissue under there.

Could be an unidentified species of one of the two. If Hypomyces, what is the host species?

probably oak or maple, appeared to be a brown rot.
