I see them on rotting wood pretty often. Here is an ob of L. perlatum on wood:

Your puffballs look a little too spiky and a little too white to be L. pyriforme.

I thought the main ID feature of L.perlatum was the substrate – it’s supposed to grow on the ground, versus M.pyriformis growing on wood.
