They grow in leaf litter under mixed hardwoods, usually attached to small sticks. This specimen was growing directly from the ground, likely from a buried stick.

I also thought this mushroom was a Laccaria the first time I encountered it.

It’s a fairly common winter agaric in deciduous woodlands.
