I do not remember what oak species it was found under, more then one was nearby judging on the leaves in the picture. I found this plant species list from the area which lists Quercus berberidifolia, Q. douglasi, Q. lobata, and Q. wislizeni. http://nrs.ucdavis.edu/stebbins/species/popweb1.htm

I don’t think there is any tanoak and the species list doesn’t list it. The pine needles in the picture would belong to Pinus sabiniana. I also found a beat-up specimen shortly after this one in Fair Oaks, CA growing under solely a similar selection of oak. I didn’t get any pictures of that one due to its state.

Looks more like a Ramaria

and Ramaria violaceceibrunnea ( http://www.mykoweb.com/... ) would have been my guess but the habitat and time of year doesn’t match.
May be Clavulina amethystina, but an older specimen.

Do you remember any nearby tree species? Tanoak, maybe?
