I do not remember what oak species it was found under, more then one was nearby judging on the leaves in the picture. I found this plant species list from the area which lists Quercus berberidifolia, Q. douglasi, Q. lobata, and Q. wislizeni. http://nrs.ucdavis.edu/stebbins/species/popweb1.htm
I don’t think there is any tanoak and the species list doesn’t list it. The pine needles in the picture would belong to Pinus sabiniana. I also found a beat-up specimen shortly after this one in Fair Oaks, CA growing under solely a similar selection of oak. I didn’t get any pictures of that one due to its state.
Do you remember any nearby tree species? Tanoak, maybe?
