Observation 65205: Cladonia cristatella Tuck.

No herbarium specimen

Notes: Appeared to be growing from rocks and soil in a field. These also grow on wood if what I was looking at was the same thing.

with scales on the stems are almost always C. cristatella. (The equivalent out west is C. bellidiflora.) Other species usually lack the scales (only have the surrounding the base of the stems, not on the stems themselves), and many are covered with powdery or granular stuff.
