This one is actually more fragile and can be partially rubbed off, if I remember correctly, while the other one is more like a paint and can only be scraped off with a knife.
Could this be the same as the other observation, just dirtier? Ditto comments about chemistry and greater magnification to get anywhere.
These lichens are found on the gate to the Hoyt park in Madison. It looks like it’s made out of sandstone.
