for Flammulina is somewhat variable, but never completely free. Often, when gills are adnexed, the attachment breaks away from the stipe as the mushrooms mature, which creates the impression that they are free.

The gills do not appear to be attached to me and so I am skeptical of Flammulina populicola/velutipes.
