But those bizarre lumpy knobby apothecia are way out there. A number of Sarcogyne also look like this (scattered black apothecia with no visible trace of thallus), maybe some of them can have irregular apothecia?

(You might have to dissect one of the black thingies to be absolutely sure they aren’t mouse turds or inorganic!)

I’m not even sure these are not just black impurities in the sandstone. Something tells me, though, it’s a life form. Please let me know if that something is wrong.
