Debbie, I misled you. The material that you handed me today indeed lacks any yellow KOH reaction, thus my quick and dirty hypothesis of “chunkycort” is just the latter. This one appears to me to be the rare species that is very much Cortinarius crassus-like. Joe Ammirati had collected it once and kept asking me about it. Your colors are not yellow enough though, I just made a lousy artificial light photo that shows the material more yellow-latte colored, you can add my photos if you see fit. This species has been described with cystidia and I am looking for some, but not sure I can differentiate it. I will send micro shots later. We’ll certainly pull some genes out of it and I’ll let the forum know of the final verdict.
