Every Morel season has its own characteristics. This year these “Smooth Thimblecaps” showed up. Not that they’re rare or unheard of, just we don’t find them every year, or that often.

They do tend to appear only every few years in numbers.
One year I found tons of them during “Morel Madness” at
Mark Twain Lake, and took the prize for most morels. The
next year, they changed the rules!
