There are several Melanelia on rock, and the C reaction in the medulla can be very weak and fleeting. According to the Sonoran Flora, if it truly is C-, then it should be M. disjuncta. M. tominii is possible if the C reaction is missed. There are others farther north which are not covered in this key, and probably yet more in Europe.
