I thought that’s what you meant!
Very true in reference to the resemblance to some Gyromitra sp. for sure Tim

Oh I certainly wasn’t implying this was G. gigas….

Just that there are species of Gyromitra that resemble Discina perlata.

Interesting also-

That Discina perlata was formerly Gyromitra perlata as well. Both these species (G. gigas and D. perlata) were collected on the same day and both were past their prime by two weeks(eg. fully mature) they were 100 percent different in size, smell, adherance to the forest floor and stem growth in every possible way and fashion. D. perlata specimen was completely flat against the ground with a barely noticeable stem, while ALL specimens of G. gigas were at least 6-8in. high and softball size on spore bearing structure. Pretty sure this post is correct, not positive though.

Your ID is very likely correct…

But I would just like to point out that Gyromitra have been brought in to the PSMS ID clinic that look nearly identical and needed the scope to be certain (The spore sizes are drastically different).

I have no experience with them personally, but when I was handed the two without knowing which was which, I got them backwards as did Kim Traverse.

Special thanks to Danny Miller for teaching this to us!
