Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: Growing out of worm hole in balsam fir log; cap shallow funnel 2.5 cm wide, tan with purplish tinge when fresh with brown center fading to brown oac646 (online auction color chart) when dry, furfuraceous, edge curled; gills decurrent, tan oac759, crowded, forking near edge; stipe 2cm x 7 mm, gills ending abruptly, stipe completely in the hole, wood/mycelia surrounding most of stipe, no annulus; spore print white/tan oac759, microscopically spores smooth cylindrical 5×3m, non-amyloid, lamellae with large conspicuous clavate cystidia on edge, pileus/stipe with thicker walled hyphae / may be dimitic, clamps not observed. Personal collection (Duluth, MN, USA).

Specimen is not as purple as some photos online. Also, described as growing on dead hardwoods and this was on a conifer log. Wondering if anyone knows of a similar variety on conifers?

“Lentinus strigosus (in part) and Lentinus rudis are synonyms. Pegler’s monumental 1983 monograph of Lentinus placed Panus rudis and Panus conchatus in Lentinus, subgenus Panus, but DNA studies (Hibbett & Donoghue, 1994; Hibbett and collaborators, 1997) have not supported a close relationship between Panus and the rest of Lentinus.”

According to Pegler’s 1983 monograph, they are “abundant to occasional on both sides and edges of lamellae” and "stick out “up to 35 μm beyond the basidia.”
