If only I’d performed a cross-section…
But considering the shape of the fungus, your theory seems probable. I chanced across an almost identical fungus a year a go, and nearly drove myself mad trying (unsuccessfully) to identify it!

is a Bolete covered by a parasite.

This unusual fungi was growing on the ground, in a eucalyptus forest in the Adealide Hills (South Australia.) Any ideas about its ID?
