Observation 71595: Tylopilus ferrugineus (Frost) Singer

No herbarium specimen

Notes: NH4OH on cap was inconclusive — did not see “a dark violet to vinaceous flash”; however, both NH4OH and KOH stained pileipellis dark brown to dark red-brown, which pretty much matches the description in B-R-B.

Recognized by sight: Initial ID: a non-bitter brown/red-brown Tylopilus species from the badiceps/ferrugineus/indecisus complex

Based on chemical features: Pileal context staining pale yellow with 3% KOH, a differentiating feature that separates T. ferrugineus from T. badiceps and T. indecisus (B-R-B)
