Recognized by sight: On the ground, so I think Cortinarius rather than Gymnopilus, but I can see the resemblance to things like Gymnopilus allantopus.

From memory these were growing from the inside of a large, decaying log. My impression at the time was that they were lignicolous… but the log may have been decayed enough to have been penetrated by tree roots.
