Recognized by sight: Esslinger claims that North American reports of P. pityrea are referrable to P. conoplea, however the material I’ve seen has all clearly been P. tavaresii. Wetmore talks about the “soredia” appearing to be isidia but lacking a cortex. This is typical of the “isidia” of P. tavaresii I’ve seen in the southern Appalachians and southern Rockies. I also note that Brodo includes the Black Hills in the distribution of P. tavaresii but not P. conoplea, so he apparently agrees.
