Observation 72505: Strobilomyces Berk.
When: 2011-07-17
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Old man in a cave. My daughter and her friend found these literally on the edge of a cave. The fruit bodies were six to eight feet below the ground level in a loess-type sandy clay. The cave itself has been excavated by kids over the years and is a few feet deep, filled with trash. But to find these mushrooms growing there was a bit of a surprise. Is this an example of a mycorrhizal relationship with tree roots? No visible organic matter in soil.
