Observation 72516: Boletus ferrugineus Schaeff.
When: 2011-07-18
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found and ided by others at the SMG meeting.

Looked up this is the Fungei Europei Xerocomus book. It seems that B. ferrugineus has the larger ridges on a slightly reticulate stipe. Also the stipe context, esp. at the base, is not yellow. The stipe context on this one was rather off-white. The cap turned black-ish in ammonia. These had rather thick feltly caps, kinda strangely colored.

Um, why mention Tylopilus? This is a Boletus or Xerocomus, not a Tylopilus. As far as I can tell…

Any good reasons why not Boletus ferrugineus? Or Xerocomus ferrugineus as some call it? Since you seem so so opposed to it…

surface white, to pale pink, staining brown when bruised. Not yellow large angular.

Reticulation at top or upper half, this specimen has none at top.

The only going for this “B ferrugineus” is correct staining with ammonia.
