Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: Several ( 4-5 )morel ‘Fruit/Blooms’ were found in the partially shaded/filtered sunlight, back yard of an older home. The soil was fairly compact sandy loam. The morels were dehydrated. Only a slight musty/leathery/mulchy scent was detected.

Recognized by sight: All true morels are (currently) in the genus Morchella but identifying to species is hard and the species concepts are confusing and fuzzy at best.

A ’shroom by any other name would taste as sweet!

“Monterey Morels,” now that has a nice ring to it! Glad to hear that they are spreading down the coast, into various disturbed urban habitats. If only they’d pop for real in the mountains! Frost on our neighborhood roofs this am spells a delayed season…
