On ground, under mixed hardwoods. Cap 9.5 cm. Dull white with darker brown fine cracks and flat scales overall. Center darker, with low umbo. Margin finely inrolled.
Flesh .7 cm. thick. Dull whitish and brownish. Smells of crude oil and anise.
Gills free, pink to dark brown, close. Partial veil cottony at first, then thinning to become raggedy, on upper stalk. White at first, becoming brown.
Spore print—blackish brown.
Stalk 12 cm. long, 1-2 cm. wide. Widens at base to clublike. Darker at top, lighter toward base. Base is yellow when cut.
