is pretty much a dead ringer for the photo/description of H. nitidia as seen in the Eastern NA Waxy Cap book. Re-reading Phillips’s account of H. vitellinus I see, “Very close to H. nitidus. Needs further study.” I recall having seen the name “vitellina” applied to collections at 2011 NEMF. So I’m wondering how much of the eastern NA material that may have gone by the name H. vitellina is currently H. nitidia? I find only two observations of H. vitellina here on MO. Ironically, one of these collections was made at Hickory Run SP… one of my personal favorite hunting grounds.

H. nitidus (presumably H. nitida) is an overall paler mushroom. My collection is a very good match for H. vitellinus, as seen in Phillips. Other such mushrooms at NEMF which found their way to the Show were labeled “vitellina.” I assume that “vitellinus” and “vitellina” are synonyms.

Why not H. nitida? They look a trifle similar. It was my impression that H. vitellina is a rarely found European Hygrocybe.
