Observation 74568: Agaricus nanaugustus Kerrigan

2" to 4" gilled stalked mushrooms clustered under a conifer. The caps are bell-shaped to convex and have scales. The stalk is hairy and not particularly dilated at the base.

too dark on the cap for A. arvensis (whatever that might end up being called), and the cogwheel pattern is more felty and extensive than in that species.

is indicative of arvensis, but not sure what other species of Agaricus in section Arvenses grow in PA, nor what distinguishes them.

odd that there was no sweet odor in these, altho odor perception is individual, and not all examples of a species will have an odor when collected.

could be arvensis, the species. can’t wait for Kerrigan’s book to come out, when we might be able to answer some of these questions with more certainty! or not. sigh.

I agree with Debbie that this is Agaricus arvensis. Have added two photos, one of a 5" cap with intact partial veil covered with white patches, and the other of an even larger cap with veil remnants and brown gills.

The smell will tell (more or less). Not floccose. No scales on stipe. Hmmm…

Perhaps not A. augustus, but an A. julia (daughter of Augustus)?!?
