Recognized by sight: Looks like a Russula, but the slightly inrolled cap margin and the forking gills are unusual for that genus. If you still have the fresh specimen you can verify the genus by trying to break the stem. Russulas generally break cleanly like chalk. However, you should also check to see if the gills produce a milky liquid when cut. If they do then it is in the sister genus Lactarius.
