Notes:
Is this a “matsutake”? Found on ground leaf litter, sandy soil. Under oak and maple and other hardwood. White spore print. Mushroom is dense and heavy. Odor is a non-distinctive earthiness. Taste same.

Recognized by sight: Huge size, sharp reflexed scales on stipe, kind of beigish gills. Holy Cow. If this is really a Macrocybe, that’s an excellent fall record for Royalston.

that species, but it looks like that species has potential to be reclassified as a Macrocybe. Pegler, Lodge, and Nakasone didn’t include this species in their study.
