I had no idea that European Umbilicaria and Lasallia were so different from North American. Maybe it’s just the southern species. I think the Scandanavian species are more similar.

the following reactions on medulla: C+r (flash), K-, KC+r. I suppose that this is an european species, since this name did not exist in the MO database at the time I created this observation.
Thanks, Jason, for your valuable comments. As you can see by this series of observations this is my first contact with so many species of this genus, so I have many things to learn.

How do you rule out Dermatocarpon for pale sterile Umbilicaria species like this? I guess if you got a positive C test it would certainly rule out Dermatocarpon. This is never discussed in the literature. (And in North America, there are very few cases where there would ever be any doubt.)
