Regardless of his comments, his photos of some very young specimens bear out your observations.

this type is the currently featured species at Mushroom Expert.

Photo enlargement shows (which I had not previously noticed) maroon edged gills and maroon edged cap.

M. atkinsoniana looks like a good fit.

The only thing I’d point out is that even the youngest caps showed well formed striations. Kuo writes that the caps develop the striations.
