Darker stipes of Marasmiellus candidus

This group might have been too young. There was another cluster of Marasmiellus candidus about an inch from this one and several older individuals had a blackish base of the stipe. I could not resist to take a shot of this group, since it was really photogenic. – Adolf

I’ve long been curious why certain M. candidus have darker stipes while others do not. Is this a diagnostic characteristic? What causes its presence or absence?
