Observation 783: Coprinopsis semitalis (P.D. Orton) Redhead, Vilgalys & Moncalvo
When: 2006-09-30
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Here is the species list from the Echo Summit foray in South Lake Tahoe, CA. This is a yearly event put on by the Fungus Fed. of Santa Cruz, and many thanks to the organizers, which put on a great weekend for all invovled. But the weekend was a bad one for mushroom hunting, it was very dry, and there were more dried out species found than fresh ones. But still almost 40 species were found fresh enough to id., although I was told on a normal year it would be over 60, and 100 on a good year.

If anyone has a good idea about this one, send it along. We didn’t have enough info to id. this one, or energy really at the end of the day. But a nice sample, grey and fuzzy all over.

If we look at the characteristics of the veil, we see that while somewhat mealy micaeo, brilliant. These characters are typical of the section Narcotici, now framed in the genre Coprinopsis. For the general appearance of the fungus, and that seems to be growing on land, in feces, almost certainly will Coprinopsis semitalis.
