Observation 80446: Helvella maculata N.S. Weber

When: 2011-10-23

Collection location: Clarion Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Joe (jem373)

No specimen available

The top of this mushroom was blackened and there were holes. I would describe this as an unusual shape: sac like, no gills, no discernible cap, with a central winged stem (see pics). I have no idea what it is. It was growing right beside a hardwood log, too old to determine what type of log, but area had been lumbered for oak species.
