Observation 80632: Exidiopsis effusa Bref.
When: 2010-10-25
No herbarium specimen

Notes: An amateur sent these two photos to the NY State Conservationist magazine and they were referred to me. I’ve never seen vertically oriented hyphal strands like this before coming from under the bark of a hardwood log which looks like beech.

A third photo sent looks like mycelium of a different fungus, but might offer a clue.

She thought at first it was ice. It appears to look like plastic bristles of a brush, but along a log?

Any ideas?

Reminds me of a Phycomycete, but I doubt it.

This post says it might be ICE that gets pressed out of wood in thin threads.
