Staining on the stem.

Compare the watery brown staining on the stem in this observation with the reddish staining of observation 76042 (http://mushroomobserver.org/76042?q=8e02).
The watery brown staining is typical of Panaeolina species while the reddish staining is typical of Panaeolus cinctulus and some other Paneolus species. If you want to see the reddish staining well, try slowly and methodically tenderizing the stem of a fresh specimen over a period of time. I haven’t tried this with Panaeolina yet.
