Observation 8198: Hydnum L.
When: 2008-05-03
No herbarium specimen

Notes: In this group of images I was able to show the gill area, which appears to be tooth-like. I noticed that there were some pointed shoots showing through the litter that I presume eventually become like the larger images. This seems a little different as usually the fungi has some sort of cap even when very immature.

Recognized by sight: My first guess is Hydnum rufescens, but it might just be a close relative.

I was all set to scoff, until I looked a bit closer. One of those pointy capped primordia has a tiny cap already. Very curious!
